The State of Agent Payment Data

Reported figures for agent-to-agent payment volume diverge by orders of magnitude, and the divergence itself is evidence that no shared system of record exists.

Why the numbers disagree

There is no shared definition of an agentic transaction. Free-tier pings, test traffic, mint-and-burn flows, and paid settlement can all be counted or excluded depending on who is measuring. Issuer-reported aggregates and independently verifiable on-chain samples answer different questions. Chain-share figures are measured over different windows and sometimes confuse transaction count with dollar volume.

In a mature market, disagreement this wide usually means fraud or error. Here it usually means the category has rails and invoices before it has a system of record. Until attribution joins telemetry, billing, and settlement under common keys, every headline number remains a local definition dressed as a global fact.

That is why this page exists: not to pick a winner, but to keep the conflict visible and sourced — so enterprises do not mistake a payment-volume headline for a closeable ledger.

Methodology note

Onaro reports figures as published by their sources and does not independently verify on-chain data — yet.
