Send Meridian alerts to Slack
Meridian can post spending alerts into a Slack channel using a Slack incoming webhook. Today that is the daily, weekly, monthly, and total spending alerts you create in Meridian. Other alerts, such as unowned agents and unpriced usage, are not sent yet.
Before you start
- You need permission to add apps to your Slack workspace. In some workspaces, an admin must approve new apps; if so, Slack will ask you to request approval.
- Choose the channel that should receive alerts, for example #ai-costs.
Step 1: Create the webhook in Slack
- Go to https://api.slack.com/apps and sign in to your workspace.
- Select Create New App → From scratch. Name it, for example Meridian alerts, choose your workspace, and select Create App.
- In the left menu, open Incoming Webhooks and switch Activate Incoming Webhooks on.
- Select Add New Webhook to Workspace, choose the channel, and select Allow.
- Copy the webhook URL. It starts with
https://hooks.slack.com/services/.
Treat this URL like a password. Anyone who has it can post to your channel. Don't share it in email or chat.
Step 2: Add the URL in Meridian
- Sign in to Meridian and go to Settings → Notifications.
- In the Slack section, paste the URL and select Save.
- Switch Slack alerts on.
- Select Send test message. Within a minute, the channel should show Onaro Meridian test alert.
Meridian stores the URL encrypted and shows only https://hooks.slack.com/services/… from now on.
Teams too?
Meridian can send to Slack, Teams, or both. Each is configured separately. See Send Meridian alerts to Microsoft Teams.
Troubleshooting
- Meridian says the URL isn't accepted: copy the full URL again. Meridian accepts only addresses that start with
https://hooks.slack.com/. - The test message doesn't arrive: check that the app is still installed in your workspace and that the webhook's channel still exists.
- You need to change the channel: select Remove in Meridian, add a new webhook for the new channel in the same Slack app, paste the new URL, select Save, and switch Slack alerts on again. Then remove the old webhook in Slack. To stop alerts without deleting the URL, switch Slack alerts off.
