How to set a budget and an alert

Last reviewed 2026-11-07.

Short answer. Open Departments and set Monthly Budget on the department. The Budget Alert Threshold starts at 0.80, and the line under it reads Alert at that percent of budget. Budget Alerts lists a department that has crossed its line, and the Alert button opens Webhooks for that event. The warning does not move spend. Email, Slack, and Teams delivery is switched on under Settings, Notifications.

The budget

On Governance, open Departments. Add Department opens Create Department. Monthly Budget ($) is the monthly amount. The placeholder is "5000."

Budget Alert Threshold is a number from 0 to 1, in steps of 0.05. A new department starts at 0.80. The line under it is "Alert at" that percent "of budget."

Create saves it. While it saves, the button says Saving.... Success says "Department created."

An agent can also carry an optional Monthly budget on Add agent. That field is the agent's own budget. The department budget is the one this page sets.

The alert on the page

When a department crosses its threshold, Budget Alerts lists the name, the current spend, the budget, and the percent. The button on that row is Alert.

At or over 100 percent, the button's tooltip is "Get notified when departments exceed budget." Below that, the tooltip is "Get notified when departments reach 80% of budget." Alert opens Webhooks. The page title is Webhooks, and the line under it is "Connect your apps to governance alerts." The events are "Department exceeded budget" and "Department at 80% of budget."

The warning does not move spend, and deleting the department does not reassign history.

Where the message is delivered

Meridian Insights shows Spending Alerts with the caption "Stay within budget limits." With none configured, the block says "No alerts configured" and "Set up spending alerts to monitor your budget." Manage Alerts and Configure Alerts open Settings.

On Settings, the Notifications section has Email Alerts ("Receive spending alerts via email"), Slack ("Receive spending alerts in a Slack channel."), and Microsoft Teams ("Receive spending alerts in a Microsoft Teams channel."). Channel setup is Send Meridian alerts to Slack and Send Meridian alerts to Microsoft Teams.
